JAVA

A network-oriented programming language invented by Sun Microsystems. It is specifically designed for writing programs that can be safely downloaded to a computer through the Internet and immediately run without fear of viruses or other harm to the computer or its files. Using small Java programs called Applets, web pages can include functions such as animations and calculators.

JPEG

An image compression standard developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG has become a standard image compression method allowing for compression ratios of approximately 10:1 before differences can be seen.

JPEG (JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP)

A standard image compression mechanism. JPEG compression is "lossy," meaning that the compression scheme sacrifices some image quality in exchange for a reduction in the file's size.

JPEG 2000

Officially called ISO 15444, the "JPEG 2000: Image Coding System", it's a standardized format that will expand the ability to manage and transport continuous tone images without noticeable loss of quality.

JUKEBOX

Automated device that holds multiple optical disks and one or more read/write drives and can swap disks in and out of drive(s) as needed.

JUST IN TIME

The concept of reducing inventories by working closely with suppliers to co-ordinate delivery of materials just before their use in the manufacturing or supply process.

JUSTIFICATION

Position of text relative to the text block that it's in. Text can be left justified, centered, or right justified.

JUSTIFY

In word processing, to print a document with even (straight, non-ragged) right and left margins.
