ZIP CODE
Zoning Improvement Plan. The USPS instituted zip codes to facilitate mail handling and delivery. The first digit represents one of ten areas of the country (0 = New England, 9 = West Coast, etc.). The first three digits together represent a Sectional Center Facility or main post office. The last two digits further define the destination point in terms of a post office or delivery center area within a large city or in terms of a small city whose residents share the same zip code.
|
ZIP+4 CODE
The nine-digit code, established in 1981, composed of: The first five digits identify the individual post office or metropolitan area delivery station associated with the address and the additional four digits identify a) Sector: The first two additional digits designate a geographic portion of a zone. It can also indicate a portion of a rural route, part of a box section or official designation, b) Segment: The last two additional digits designate a specific block face, apartment house, bank of boxes, firm, building or other specific delivery locations.
